NEWS / COMMENTARIES

Make-A-Wish Foundation Auction

Just as I announced this auction was to be held March 5-12, I will need to postpone by a couple of weeks. My wife has a couple of job interviews on the East Coast (yes, I may be moving again!) and I will be unable to hold the auction during that time. Barring any other interviews, I expect to hold the auction March 26-April 2, 1999.

Topical Collecting Contest

Thanks to all those who entered this contest with their essays. The most advanced list forwarded was by Charlie Gore (No1Collect@aol.com) He collects US Postal Stamps on phonecards. His list is available at: http://www.cardmall.com/pol/stamps.htm Many others contributed, and I will list some comments I received below. The longest paragraph I received was from H.W.C. Furman of South Carolina. He writes:

"Collecting should be fun. It should not be for investment or profit. It should be used to inform yourself and to enlighten others. I have Collected many things, but stamp collecting and exhibiting showed me how to collect topically. I won awards with exhibits of "Ducks on Stamps"; "Concentration Camp Covers" and even "Germany and the Inflation of the 20's, as depicted on covers." My pages were exhibit pages and, if you do it on phone cards, you can mount and show (at local stamp exhibitions, at first), the results of your work. I have several topical collections (I prefer to exchange and use e-mail, corresponding with collectors all over the world. That's part of the fun), however, there are times I must purchase and I have found a good dealer in Illinois, one in London, one in New Zealand and at least one in China. I have never been cheated. What do I currently collect? #1: at least one card from each and every country in the world. #2 (I am about complete on #1, so I have moved on to include provinces (try figuring out the Chinese provinces without reading Chinese. It is easy with good correspondents and a catalog or so.)#3, an example of each system used in each country of the world, such as Gem Chip, Schlumberger Chip, Magnetic, Optical, Remote, etc. (Again, you need good catalogs or friends.)#4. Probably the dumbest of my specials is my collection of at least one card from each American and Canadian card producing company. I collect not only the companies like US West, NYNEX, Bell South, but also I am trying to get an example of the dozens and dozens of cards produced by "flash companies", as I call them, many (most) of which are out of business, even if not in jail. Many of these cards have been "dumped", many are still lying around. Now, the most important part. How to display. I mount most of my cards in the normal 8 pocket pages, with one pocket with a card and the pocket next to it with a neatly printed title. I use a little "Brother" label printer to make up the title card. The big, big pieces, I attach to a sheet of "Cover 88, Bristol", using either corners or 3M Spray Mount to glue (it smells like rubber cement) and I use it on the holders, not the cards. I also make up special pages on my computer and Deskjet 720C Hewlett Packard color printer. It will accept the heavy card stock. To mount the individual cards, I use an adhesive ready "pocket". I buy these from a place in England and they are not cheap. But, I'll bet I have the prettiest collection in town,. After mounting on the card stock, I slip everything into a clear page holder (of the non-virulent type plastic) and put them in loose leaf albums. I use the expensive kid' school binders that have zippers all the way around, are padded and keep cards from slipping out. I must tell you, I am 77 years old and do hope to leave my collection to a university so some doctoral candidate can write his thesis on such a variety of topics as, "The Phone Card and the Economy"; "Art and Design on Phone Cards of the World" and even, "How a Few Selfish Bastards Almost Destroyed a Great New Hobby." Incidentally, you better know that I just gave up my last all embracing hobby of military parachuting, at age 75, when I collided with some very tough ground in Slovakia. I welcome all weird cards and can send back some equally wild. Hell, I even went down and slept on the side of the erupting volcano on Montserratt to bring back some cards (and ash). If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space.!!!"

Others write:

"I'm an avid Coke and Pepsi collector. Other then the Gold cards issued by Collectacard and some of the Sprint proofs I'm almost complete. Missing one Pepsi card. Working on both since 1993. Having a great time."

"I love phone cards that come with promotions from major food companies. It is nice to go to the store and buy (example General Mills International coffee) and get a free phone attached to the purchase."

"I collect phonecards with HIPPOS on them. There aren't that many out there that I can find."

"I have a particular interest in commercial airlines phonecards, the Fauna Iberia series from Spain, cityscapes from around the world, and animals in nature."

"I have a small multi-lateral promo phonecard collection; I am always looking for promotional phonecards advertising a product that have been issued in different countries. These cards need not be issued for the same promotion, but the same product. Examples would be the Kit Kat cards from France, Ireland, Finland and the US, or the Finesse shampoo cards from the US, Denmark and Australia."

"I enjoy collecting phone cards with Famous Name Brands on them, like Coke or other food/drink names."

"Thought I'd share what drives me. I like to collect first's such as the brilliant jumbo telecard man, first baby bells, first chips, teletickets, first die cut, public card intelexpo, retail remote memory Phonline USA, etc"

"I tend to collect stuff I am interested in, i.e. X-men phone cards, Star Trek, X-files and the like. Since I collect other forms of the same phone related subject it tends to round out my collections"

"I personally collect all NYNEX cards, all Sprint Super Bowl Ticket Cards, All Titanic Cards ( including the silver coin) and many other interesting cards. I have about 200 cards in my collection."

"My other major theme in addition to collecting Cayman Islands cards is collecting cards picturing boats, ships, canoes, or any other type of watercraft. As I work for an ocean freight line carrier servicing Central America and the Caribbean, I decided to collect phonecards with watercraft themes."

A few collectors wrote that they had lists available on the web. Those who included that information are:

"I'm a topical phonecard collector. I specialize in reptile and amphibians -- yes, frogs, turtles, lizards, snakes, etc. I have a checklist on my website. http://www.angelfire.com/ca/turtlemanfrank/phone.html

From: Frank Lopez <chertlop@CLASS.ORG>

"I do collect telephone cards related to Apple Computer. I don't only have a list which I can email if you like, but also an online catalog of all the cards I know off. The URL is: http://home.intekom.com/kw/apple/applecat.html

From: Klaus Warschkow <kw@intekom.co.za

> I will collect most any cards I can get my hands on, but I do have a few favorite topics that are especially interesting to me. One of my favorite topics is United Nations cards. In addition to being a phonecard collector, I am pursuing a PhD in international relations and international law, so this is one of the few topics that "fits" with my degree. I have been lucky enough to add a few of these cards to my collection, and I have them pictured at http://www.geocities.com/Athens/5225/themes/un/un.html They are: Holland: UNICEF set (Germany and Hungary have also issued UNICEF cards, which I haven't got yet) Malaysia: UN tank card, HT: UN 50th anniversary card (I also have a NYNEX UN anniversary card which isn't pictured) UK and Italy: IFOR cards issued to peacekeepers in Bosnia- these are UN cards only in the sense that NATO's IFOR took over from the UN's UNPROFOR, but this is not an easy theme and I'll take what I can get! I have heard that there are other IFOR cards from Germany and Portugal, but I haven't been able to find them.

From: Amy Eckert <aeckert@du.edu>

Finally, Peter Novack has a web site with a list of topicals already on-line, check it out at: http://www.geocities.com/RodeoDrive/8556/topic.html And now, the winner of the contest is: Ruth Davis. She submitted the entry with the hippos. I cant guarantee any cards with hippos on them as I am unsure I have any, but an assortment that catalogs at least $200 will be sent to her as soon as she writes with her postal mailing address. Look for the topic of topicals to be listed in future POLs.

Washington DC Phone Card Collector's Group

From: Del Deligianis

The Washington DC Phone Card Collector's Group met at it's usual site on Wednesday, February 23rd. Some of the discussion focused on the devaluation of the various collections. We looked at copies of the picures Lenny Rapp posted from the FUN show. Yes Richard Brook did attend. We discussed the newest Diet Pepsi Phone cards. Only some of us have seen the one attached to 24 packs. We also discussed how to acquire a Snuggle card and a Breeze card. It's a secret. Our newest member is Jeff Turner, the president of InTouch, USA, a cellular phone rental company from Chantilly Virginia. He learned of our group from charter member Art Becker. He brought a collection of show cards which showed he had been to some of the same shows we had attended.

Jeff is looking into developing stored value cards. He shared with us a prepaid cellular card that works just like a long distance prepaid phone card. It is unique in that it will work on any cellular phone, even if it is not currently connected to any service. It works in specific areas at this time, but the potential is most interesting. He provided a sample card for each of us to try. It advertises Big Power Slim Batteries, a zinc-air battery for cellphones which lasts for a full month recharging with air. He brought one for us to see and it does look like a great toy for anyone tired of constantly recharging their cell phone battery For more information contact him at InTouchUSA@AOL.com

I brought some of the Macy's cards I recently acquired from Ginny English. I also brought my new SEARS supplement and I regret to say none of us were able to find the error card in the package. With all the cards in the nicely done publication any one of them could be a card or a bogus card. We all agreed Steve Schwartz puts out a terrific catalog. It's nice to see SEARS is still a name in the phone card hobby.

Richard brought me a starter kit to get me interested in Casino cards. Atlantic City here I come. Can Vegas be a future destination? Art keep the slot machines warm. George Samuels, Tom Zelinski, Susan Zelinski, Richard Brook and I then had our kitty of cards and as I had to leave to attend a school board meeting, I can't say who went away with what cards. Due to Easter and other calendar conflicts the next meeting will be in eight weeks. Wednesday, April 21st again at the food court in Pentagon City.

PRESS RELEASES

Argo City Press Release

Argo City Company is proud to present its latest addition into the world of contemporary comics, the "Madman" phone card. Created, written and drawn by Michael Allred, Madman Comics have drawn the attention of a widespread audience. The newest series is one of the best quality comics on the racks today. Published by the creator friendly Dark Horse Comics, Madman is the perfect combination hero to attract mainstream and alternative readers. The stories, art and characters are all top notch and done with a creative zeal that Allred breathes into the mix. In fact, much of the creator, Michael Allred, is part of the character, Madman. In Mikes own words: " A lot of me is in Madman. He's just the perfect vehicle to filter all my sensibilities through. I think you'll find with most writer/artists the average pure cartoonist finds an alter ego in his main characters. Whether it's Dave Stevens in The Rocketeer, or Matt Wagner in Mage, or Will Eisner in The Spirit, we use these characters. So a lot of me is in him, definitely. We share a lot of the same views. We both live by the golden rule, you know, to treat people as we'd like to be treated."

Mike has included his very talented wife Laura in this dream too. She is the colorist that brings to life the pop-art style, jump off the page action at the readers. The Madman character won The Harvey Award in 1992 for the best new series. The Harvey is the comic equivalent of an Oscar! Future plans include a live action film for which Michael will produce. Seems like no end to the creativity inspired by the character Madman. Madman phone cards are limited to one thousand individually numbered cards. They include five minutes of pre-paid long distance phone time that is valid for six months after first usage. Phone time is provided by leading carrier WorldCom. They will be available through Diamond Comics Distributors in an upcoming Previews. They have a suggested retail of $3.99. In addition to the regular versions, Allred will be autographing a special edition of 100. These special hand-signed cards will be available through Argo City Company.
