Long Beach Expo This Week
The Long Beach Collectibles Exposition will begin on Thursday, February 11th and run through Sunday, February 14th. For phonecard collectors, there will be two extra special events. The first is a collector/dealer dinner, which is scheduled for Thursday evening after the show. It will be held at the Dear Heart Thai Restaurant at 3832 E Anaheim Ave. I will be attending, and transportation is available.
The second event is a drawing for prizes sponsored by Steve Eyer and The Card Mall. Here is a breakdown of the prizes:
Grand Prize:
$500 face of phone cards of a major telephone company. There are 40 Mint, expired cards in this prize.
Other Prizes:
A telecard from North American Telecom cataloging $100.00.
A MoneyCard Collector Catalog. We will ship this to anywhere in the world for you, so if you already have it, you may have a friend whom you could surprise with a great gift. We will ship it for you at no charge.
A splendid CTN (Canada) set from K-Mart. This is a puzzle set and catalogs $95.00. Compliments of Card Mall.
A mystery lot of 20 different US Phonecards. Compliments of Card Mall.
The grand prize will be drawn at dinner on Thursday night, and the winner MUST be present! However, the other prizes will be drawn on Sunday, and you do not need to be present to win. Additionally, at the dinner, a grab bag will be passed around, and every collector will get some nice phonecards. E-mail me for further details of the show. I will be walking the floor on Thursday.
AOL: The games being played
If you are a phonecard collector who is thinking about joining AOL to be a part of the phonecard community, you may want to reconsider. A while ago, AOL announced that any commercial posts can not be placed in the collector forms. This policy is just recently being enforced. What collectors have to do is post in a classified section with lots of other non-phonecard ads. Additionally, I posted a message complaining of this policy change, and it was removed with a message from the section monitor that the post was off-topic! Part of an on-line forum is not only the basic collecting messages, but the banter between members which is often not related to the topic. A good example of this type of community is the CompuServe Telecard Forum. The AOL phonecard section is a complete waste of time, in my opinion.
PRESS RELEASES
Huntington Smart Card Takes Off at UCF
ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The Huntington National Bank recently introduced its smart card program during a mass carding event
held on the University of Central Florida campus. The event attracted more than 18,000 students, faculty and staff who lined up to be one of the
first to receive the state-of-the art ``UCF Card''. Even Jim Dunlap, President of The Huntington's Southern Region, and Dr. John C. Hitt,
President of the University of Central Florida, didn't miss out on the excitement, as they activated their new cards.
Other college campuses such as Florida State University and Arizona State University have a similar type product, however the UCF Card is the
most technologically advanced version. In addition to serving as an identification and library card, other functions include purchases at
campus vending machines and photocopiers and pre-paid long distance phone service. It also serves as the users' ATM card for their
Huntington Checking Account.
The carding event was organized into five different stations:
* Station #1 registered and verified recipient data
* Station #2 took a photo of the recipient
* Station #3 printed and issued the new UCF Card
* Station #4 was available for Huntington checking accounts
* Station #5 provided long distance service for the phone card function
The Huntington National Bank also opened a new on-campus Access Office on November 2nd to continue the issuance of smart cards and
Huntington Student Access Accounts. To date, The Bank has issued 24,000 UCF cards and opened 2,500 UCF accounts.
