Chicago White Sox Phone Card

By James Chudnow

Since 1996, local Baby Bell Ameritech (which is petitioning to be combined with Baby Bell SBC) has worked with the CHICAGO WHITE SOX to issue three phonecards each year as giveaways to fans. ( See Jim Chudnow's articles in past issues of Moneycard Collector & Beckett's)

This year, the subject matter of the cards was the 40th Anniversary of the White Sox's making it to the World Series (which they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers). The cards were given away to the first 15,000 fans attending certain games, and each pictures a 40th Anniversary logo plus one of the Sox heroes of that time, with his 1959 Season Stats on the back of the 2-sided folder holding the card:

For the May 21 game vs. New York, the card pictures AL SMITH; since the game was postponed due to heavy rains, it's anyone's guess what happened to the "remaining" cards (as it's unlikely anywhere near 15,000 people showed up that day).

Due to intense interest in the "Subway Series" vs. their cross-town rivals the Chicago

Cubs, only about a third of the sellout crowd was able to get one of the cards released on July 10th picturing JIM LANDIS (who was expected to be on hand to autograph the cards and other items for fans). The third card in the series was given out on September 12th,

during a game against the Cleveland Indians (who lost to the Sox, 4-3, in front of 20,000+ fans). It pictures pitcher BILLY PIERCE (who was also shown on one of the Sox's 1996 "Stars of Yesterday" cards given away to attendees).

Pierce was on hand to throw out the first pitch of the game on the 12th,and he later signed items for fans at a table on the main level of the grandstand. While many people had him sign the new phonecard itself, a considerable number preferred to have him sign only the commemorative folder holding the card..
