NEWS / COMMENTARIES
COMMENT ON THE NEW ZEALAND MARKET:
By David Levin (jdlholdings@fpnet.co.nz)
This month sees the exciting launch of the new Telecom payphone network and
the introduction of the new chip phonecards. The first general issue set
has been launched and this will run until the end of the year. The "New
Chip" theme has been used, first seen on the Trial Chip cards.
It's now 10 years since phonecards were introduced into New Zealand. A
"last of/first of" issue to be released will contain the last magnetic
strip cards to be produced by Telecom and will provide the closure for a
definitive set of New Zealand magnetic strip cards and mark a decade of
interesting and turbulent years of phonecard collecting in New Zealand.
The latest phonecard releases from Telecom are:
WINNIE THE POOH PART 2:
Once again these attractive and very collectable cards follow Pooh and his
friends and their gently amusing adventures in Hundred Acre Wood. If you
haven't ordered your set yet, do so before the first price increase.
TRIAL ISSUE CHIP CARD SET:
A two card set of only 20,000 cards ($5 and $10 denomination). Used to test
the new Ascom Monetel phones that were installed at the Naval Base in
Auckland. A very limited number were offered for sale to dealers.
Telecom have just announced a 3rd $20 card that is only available in a
special collectors pack. Only 500 of these packs will be issued.
NEW CHIP GENERAL ISSUE:
A 4 card set of $5, $10, $20 and $50 denominations. The first general issue
cards featuring the new Gemplus chips.
Over 605,000 $5 cards have been produced, the highest mintage ever for a
Telecom phonecard, but only 7,000 of the $50 cards will be released. With
this low number, used sets of cards will be difficult to obtain.

PRESS RELEASES
Building a Star - The first phone card in space
Kennedy Space Center, Florida. July 22, 1999 Ken Streetman, President of Capital Communications Group, Houston, TX was present for the launch of the Shuttle STS-93. The liftoff of Columbia marked another first in CapComm's history of firsts. Having had the first phone card in space was quite an honor for this 6 year old Houston company. Streetman's friend Jeff Ashby was on his first shuttle mission. Ashby was the pilot for Commander Eileen Collins. Ashby took CapComm's phone card "Building a Star" with him on his first mission. Thus making it the first phone card in space. The picture of the card was chosen by Streetman from a poster designed by Ms. Frances Jones.
This copyrighted picture was loaned to CapComm by SPACEHAB to be used as the #1 card of a 12 card set. The remaining 11 cards of the set will show different views and construction of the International Space Station. Proceeds from the sale of this 12 card set will go to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. This 12 card set will become part of a permanent display at the Astronaut Hall of Fame in Titusville, FL.
A special presentation of the "First Card in Space" will be made to the Hall of Fame. The card and a picture of the card in space will be the cornerstone of the display.
To receive on of these very special, limited edition "First in Space" collector cards, just make a $10.00 donation payable to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. Then, send your check or money order to CapComm's Houston office and they will send you one of these collector cards for free. CamComm plans to raise over $250,000 from sales of the "Building a Star" card set. Collect all 12 cards in this International Space Station card set. To make a donation and receive your card, please write or call. Capital Communications Group. 915 Silber Rd. Houston, TX 77024 (713) 681-3202
