Phonecards In Hawaii

I recently returned from my first visit to Hawaii (It was a great trip) - Of course I was on the lookout for phonecards. They have a much larger presence there than they do in California. Even in non-tourist areas, there were phonecards to be found. Vending machines were quite common. Every single one that I saw had GTE Hawaii cards. The rate is 25 cents per minute, but more importantly, there is no expiration date on the cards. Convenience stores had these cards for sale as well. One store that any Hawaii visitor will recognize is ABC Stores - They are located everywhere, especially in tourist areas. They had Japanese phonecards for sale, as well as cards that people could use to call Japan. The stores even accepted Yen as currency!

Phone Card Scam

One unlucky reader wrote to inform me about a scam that was sent via e-mail. The e-mail message looks like this:

Subject: Urgent! 3 Day Special! Act Now!

500 Minute Prepaid Phone Card!

Over 8 Hours of Talk Time Available!

3 Day Special! Ends May 20th!

1 Card $17.50

2 Cards $33.00

3 Cards $48.00

Reliable. 100%Gauranteed. Very Low 25 cent connect. In Business 7 Years!

To Order Call Toll Free When Prompted Press Option 4

This person received the cards, and they do not work. The rate for the 1 card works out to 3 1/2 cents per minute. I imagine many others out there were burned as well. Just a warning to everyone, and of course the old saying holds true - If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Fuji Card not working

Another reader wrote about a Fuji card that expires 6/30/99, and did not work. Has anyone had any problems with a 10 minute Fuji card?

Bingo & Gaming Makes Pushes Into Lucrative Ohio Pull-Tab Market

AUSTIN, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 15, 1999--Bingo and Gaming International, Inc. (OTC BB: BING), an Austin-based distributor of prepaid phone cards and machines that distribute its prepaid phone cards, announced today that it has entered the lucrative pull-tab sales market in the state of Ohio, bringing the total number of states in which it operates to 10. The company began placing its Lucky Strike pull-tab machines with charitable organizations in the Columbus area several weeks ago and plans quick entry into the rest of the state. The company is now conducting discussions with a variety of interested parties who will become authorized distributors for its machines in Ohio.

Bingo & Gaming's Lucky Strike pull-tab machines, which resemble Las Vegas-style gaming machines, are legal in the state of Ohio when operated by non-profit. The company, which sells, leases, operates and supplies both prepaid phone card sweepstakes machines and pull-tab machines.

``We are very excited to have our machines in Ohio. Pull-tab sales are already tremendous. As a matter of fact, pull-tabs are so popular that some organizations operate storefronts just to sell them,'' says Bingo & Gaming International CEO Reid Funderburk. ``Even so, the introduction of our machines should give the established industry a whole new twist, bringing both a renewed interest to long-time pull-tab players and introducing the games to many new ones.''

Bingo & Gaming International has also recently announced its entry into several other large markets. These new markets include California, Pennsylvania and Ohio, all of which appear to be extremely profitable markets. ``Last month we predicted that our revenues would more than double just from the additional sales during the 3rd and 4th quarters of this year. Ohio just pushes us that much further over the top,'' adds Funderburk.

Ohio is expected to be the largest potential market in the U.S. for Bingo & Gaming International's pull-tab machines, which utilize the same technology as the company's Lucky Strike phone card dispensers.

PCA Chooses Q Comm

OREM, Utah--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--Q Comm International Inc. (OTC BB:QCCM - news), a prepaid telecommunications service provider, announced today that it has been chosen by the Professional Caddies Association (``PCA'') to be the exclusive provider of prepaid phone cards to each of its 1,360 members.

Q Comm and the PCA will initiate their relationship at the U.S. Open in Pinehurst, N.C. from June 17-20. The PCA members participating in the U.S. Open will be wearing caps with Q Comm's insignia prominently displayed on those caps.

Professional Golf Caddies, who are members of the PCA, travel thousands of miles each year while on tour with professional golfers participating in tournaments around the world. These frequent travelers and others like them can reduce their phone bills and control their expenses by using a prepaid phone card like that offered by Q Comm to make long distance calls while away from home.

The company's chief executive officer, Paul Hickey, commented on the selection of its service by the PCA, stating: ``Prepaid phone cards are often viewed as only a distant second to calling cards offered by traditional long-distance carriers. The decision of the Professional Caddies Association demonstrates, however, that prepaid phone cards provide benefits to many

people, especially to persons who travel regularly. We are extremely pleased that the PCA has chosen Q Comm as its exclusive telecommunications provider, and we look forward to receiving the national exposure that comes with participating in the U.S. Open Golf Championship.''
