April sees the last "general issue" series of cards with magnetic strip technology. From July, Telecom will start introducing the new chip cards and offer a trial set to collectors. As with the present technology, trial telephone boxes will be installed at strategic locations to test the new cards, and there is much speculation amongst collectors as to where these will be. High on the list is university campuses and populated offshore islands to check that the salt air doesn't affect the new hardware.
The latest phonecard releases from Telecom are:
CHINESE NEW YEAR:
It started in 1993, with the Year of the Cock, and has continued every year since. Now, with the arrival of the Chinese New Year, collectors can look forward to the next card in this series. The Year of the Rabbit was released in February. Only 700 $50 cards were produced, all in presentation packs.
TELECOM DIRECTORIES:
To celebrate the 10th birthday of Telecom Directories, who produce the Yellow Pages, 1500 $5 phonecards were produced in appreciation of the support received from customers, staff and suppliers.
PEANUTS PART 2:
This phonecard series began with the much anticipated release of Charlie Brown to rapturous applause throughout collector markets late last year, and will be complimented by Snoopy, the third release soon. Lucy however is second and she is here now! Just 750 sets of cards were produced in the stark and simple artwork we all love.
FRIENDS OF MICKEY PART 4:
This year's release features Donald's nephews Huey, Dewey and Louie. They are frequent companions at home and on adventures to far-off lands. They can be a mischievous trio, playing tricks to goad Donald into one of his famous tantrums. A limited edition of just 800 sets have been produced of this wonderful set.
Funds will be donated to the Red Cross International Response Fund (www.redcross.org), as well as other charitable organizations involved in the Balkan refugee effort. FCG, Inc. will also provide free phone cards to Kosovo refugees that settle in Washington state.
PARAMUS, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 9, 1999-- Four-city Radio Campaign Launched to Spread Consumer Awareness
The ``virtual prepaid phone card'' is seemingly a product whose time has come.
Destia Communications, Inc. (formerly EconoPhone), an international, facilities-based, telecommunications company, has a hit on its hands in Presto! Card(TM), which customers use for domestic and international long-distance calls immediately after an easy sign-up at www.prestocard.com.
Quietly launched on the Internet in December 1998, Presto! Card is used actively by thousands of customers worldwide with a recharge rate of up to seventy percent. In addition, Destia has a patent application pending on the Presto! Card. The paperless pre-paid service (with no card to be lost or stolen) features a 9.9 cent per minute domestic rate with no surcharges (five cents per minute for domestic calls dialed in New York and Los Angeles) and international rates as low as 16 cents per minute. Presto! Card enhancements include automatic recharging and worldwide speed-dialing, as well as the addition of more local and international access services.
To help spread word of the card's convenience and cost-savings, Destia Communications has launched a radio advertising campaign in New York, Boston, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. The campaign, created by Ganz/Gross Advertising, New York City, features a series of four, 60-second humorous vignettes, that highlight the benefits of owning and using a virtual prepaid phone card. ``Presto! Card's initial acceptance has surpassed all our expectations,'' said Destia Communications CEO Alfred West. ``The tremendous response - and early profitability -- is giving us the leverage to expand our web-enabled phone card services and lower rates at the same time.''
Presto! Card now gives customers the option of maintaining a list of 20 speed-dial numbers that can be accessed from anywhere in the world the card is used. As an added convenience, customers can edit their speed-dial list by using any worldwide web browser.
``We also have expanded our international market,'' Mr. West said. ``Presto! Card now provides toll-free access from the U.S. and in 17 other countries -- Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Monaco, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.''
``Presto! Card is ideal for business travelers, college students, sales executives, leisure travelers and those with instant communication needs. Even better, it is the lowest priced prepaid card of its kind,'' said Mr. West.
Presto! Card is available in denominations of $10, $15, $20, $25 or $50. To order, customers simply complete the easy on-line order form and hit the submit button. The order is sent over a secure connection to Destia for verification. Within seconds, the credit card information is authorized, and an e-mail comes back with a toll-free access number and a personal security code for the Presto! Card account. The minimum call length is 30 seconds, and the customer is billed in six second increments after that. Presto! Card users can go online to view their calling record and determine the number of minutes remaining on the virtual card account. Rates remain the same 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Additional terms and conditions are specified on the Presto! Card website at www.prestocard.com.
Destia Communications, Inc., headquartered in Paramus, New Jersey, owns and operates a carrier-grade digital network in the United States and Europe. The company has sustained exceptional growth since it was founded in 1992 with a strong emphasis on technological innovation and a low cost structure that enables Destia to offer extremely competitive pricing while maintaining outstanding quality. Destia's aggressive network expansion includes carrier-grade Northern Telecom switches in London, Brussels, Paris, Berlin, Frankfurt, Zurich, Amsterdam and Toronto as well as in major U.S. cities including New York, Miami and Los Angeles. The Destia network contains additional points of presence in seven major U.S. cities and seven major European cities. Destia also has operating agreements that reach into Northern Europe, the Baltic region and the Middle East.
This new service offers members a rechargeable phone card with 200 domestic minutes of calling time and 500 FlightFund miles for only $50. At ten miles per dollar, the FlightFund Global Phone Card offers a unique way of earning miles from America West.
``One of the most exciting benefits of this new program is the ease with which members can obtain a card and begin earning miles,'' says Tom Byrnes, vice president of marketing and sales for CSI. ``Members will receive a card in their statements this month and can begin using them immediately. The FlightFund Global Phone Card, utilizing Sprint's all fiber optic network, will provide superior voice services for FlightFund Global Phone Card holders.''
Sprint, the exclusive provider of Telecommunications services to the FlightFund program, is a global communications company which built and operates the only nationwide, all digital, fiber optic network and is a leader in advanced data communications services.
``By adding the FlightFund Global Phone Card to our vast member benefits, we are providing a valuable new tool to facilitate telecommunications for today's busy traveler,'' comments Mike Smith, America West senior vice president, marketing and sales. ``Earning miles and accommodating busy lifestyles -- this product is a winning combination for FlightFund members.
