Mobile Phones And Combi-Cards Pave The Way For The Expanding Smart Card Industry Claims New SJB Report
LANGPORT, U.K.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 3, 1999--SJB Research as today launched a new study on the global smart card market, detailing costs, benefits, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. The new edition of The Smart Card report includes sections on smart card technologies, applications, systems, equipment, suppliers, ancillaries, markets, drivers and trends.
According to The Smart Card report, the worldwide boom in digital mobile telephones is going to be a major driver for the smart card market. ``As well as the obvious point that every GSM digital mobile phone requires a smart card, we also see a new trend emerging in the shape of the mobile phone with two card slots; since it is becoming so widely accepted as a remote terminal for telephony, there is a good chance that GSM phones will become widely accepted as a remote terminal for banking and for virtual shopping,'' says David Jones, co-author of The Smart Card.
``There is also a still unquantifiable surge to come in demand for smart cards as an access medium to the new wave of subscription television
and radio services,'' he continued. r
Other application areas analysed in The Smart Card report include: credit, debit and stored value cards; remote payments; public telephones;
public transport; utilities; leisure; traffic management; welfare; road tolls; national identity; healthcare; campus cards; employee cards; customer loyalty.
The next big push in smart card chip technology will take place in the area of dual interface chips. These will initially be required for combined
transport and payment applications, says the report.
