Subject: A Great Michael Jordan Offer One of the first and most attractive Michael Jordan Cards was issued in late 1994 by Phame PhoneNet. This is the only card issued by them that made the catalog. Maybe the only card. The 23-Minute telecard was originally sold for $23 I believe, and because of the relatively high price, few were bought by collectors. Rather, they were sold to basketball audiences, I believe, at the games through concession stands.

The card is very attractive and shows Michael Jordan in business suit. Very nice! The occasion was the retirement of the famous #23 basketball jersey and the date was November 1, 1994. The card comes in a nice window envelope and is serial numbered.

And the price? Not $23.00, but just $8.00. Good things come to he who waits! And if you have the need for more of Michael, 10 cards are $60.00. The time has expired.

Long Beach Show

Now that the FUN show is history until January of 2000, the next collector show on the horizon is the Long Beach Collectibles Expo. This show will be held February 11-14, 1999 at the Long Beach Convention Center. Admission is $4, which is good for all four days of the show. Additionally, if you are a member of a numismatic organization, admission is free of charge. If you are in the area, it is a great way to see phonecard dealers set up in a retail environment. As of now, I am aware of three dealers setting up: Steve Eyer, Carson City King, and Ginnie Katchur. Additionally, there will be a collector/dealer dinner one of the evenings of the show (details to be announced soon) For information on the internet, the show has a web site at: http://www.longbeachshow.com/

PRESS RELEASES

Official FUN (Florida United Numismatists) Card Show

The Phone Card Connection is pleased to be able to offer the Official Phone Card of the recent FUN (Florida United Numismatists) show. We were granted permission to use the official logo, and this is the card that was sold at the show.

The card is in the shape of a coin measuring 2 1/8" inches round. The official logo of FUN is on the top center of the card and the show information, including the date and place of the show, is on the bottom. In the middle are colorful cartoon like characters of coins, sea horses, castles, and water, representing both the coin show and the Orlando area. The cards have a little hole on top so that it can be used as a key chain (included). The best part of this is that the mintage is only 200 individually numbered open PIN 5 minute cards, with a portion of the cards going to FUN representatives. For more information, please call 888-850-2273 or email lenny@cashcards.com.

AT&T Buys Phone-Card Company

DUBLIN, Ohio (AP) -- AT&T (NYSE:T - news) is buying SmarTalk Tele-Services Inc., a prepaid phone-card company, for $192.5 million in cash, giving the telecommunications giant an entry into the phone-card market.

The announcement on Tuesday came as SmarTalk, based in Dublin, Ohio, sought protection under federal bankruptcy laws.

The deal, which needs bankruptcy court and regulatory approval, includes $10 million to keep the company operating until the sale is closed, probably in late March, AT&T spokeswoman Eileen Connolly said.

SmarTalk and 19 affiliates filed for Chapter 11 protection in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del., on Tuesday.

SmarTalk sells the cards in increments of 15 to 300 minutes through 100,000 retail outlets and the U.S. Postal Service.

Shares of SmarTalk have been halted since Tuesday. The Nasdaq Stock Market has asked the company for more information on the press release it issued on the AT&T deal, but a Nasdaq spokesman would not disclose details of the request.

Borders Debuts Valentine's Day Electronic Gift Certificate Card

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Can't quite compose a sonnet to your beloved? Flowers and candy too trite for your tastes? Borders Books and Music comes to the rescue with a special Valentine's Day electronic gift certificate card that's as right for your sweetie as it is for your child's favorite teacher.

The Borders Valentine's Day electronic gift certificate card, available in a $25 denomination, goes on sale Feb. 1 in all U.S. Borders stores and through Borders.com (www.borders.com). It is the size of a credit card and features a colorful heart graphic. Like all Borders electronic gift certificates, it allows the lucky recipient to choose books, music, videos and any item within the store. It is redeemable only at Borders Books and Music locations across the United States. Similar to a prepaid phone card, the electronic gift certificate card automatically retains any unused balance and Borders gives shoppers the added convenience of a toll-free phone line to check for updated balance information.

Best of all, as a special Valentine's Day promotion, Borders Books and Music stores will include a free blank journal with every Valentine's Day electronic gift certificate card while supplies last. The journal, a $4.95 value, also features a heart graphic and is bound with the electronic gift certificate, by a tasteful silver band, making a nice gift presentation. The heart journal is available only through stores, not when purchasing electronic gift certificates cards online.

``Our electronic gift certificates were phenomenally popular during the holidays,'' said Rich Flanagan, president of Borders stores. ``Since Valentine's Day is a big gift-giving holiday, we thought it would help to give shoppers an option that shows some style and is appropriate for lots of people from lovers to moms, dads, teachers, friends, baby-sitters and just about everyone.''

ORGA Will Implement Unique Smart Card-based Loyalty Program for the Mark of the Quad Cities

PAOLI, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 21, 1999--ORGA Card Systems, a pioneer and leader in developing smart card technology for retail/loyalty applications, has been chosen by The MARK of the Quad Cities to implement a chip-based stored-value card for the 12,000-seat-capacity, all-purpose arena.

The six-year-old, state-of-the-art facility serves the Quad Cities area, comprised of Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa as well as Rock Island and Moline, Illinois.

With an initial delivery of pre-loaded $20 disposable cards available in four designs, this innovative program will enable MARK customers to make cashless purchases along the building's concessions concourse. The first series of new smart cards will be marketed to United Hockey League fans attending Quad City Mallard home games at the arena.

According to Andy Arriviello, Director of New Business Development for ORGA, entertainment arenas represent an excellent opportunity for smart card penetration and growth.

``Facility managers across the United States are just now beginning to recognize the tremendous potential for increased revenues that smart cards can generate,'' explains Arriviello. ``We believe this exciting new technology, applied in a user-friendly manner, will help arenas expand their clientele by offering a more comprehensive array of services.''

Steve Hyman, Executive Director of The MARK, admits to always looking for new ways to add value to every visitor's experience at the arena. Since its grand opening in 1993, Hyman and his administrative team have elevated this mid-sized venue in a secondary market to the forefront of the entertainment industry, winning Performance Magazine's ``Arena of the Year'' Award five straight years.

``One of the keys to The MARK's success is that we're not afraid to try new ideas here,'' Hyman reports. ``Only a handful of other arenas throughout the country are testing the smart card loyalty concept. Our philosophy is that by staying on the leading edge of technology, we can deliver a better overall product to our customers. We also are confident that ORGA can help us maximize the potential of the smart card as we move forward with future projects.''

First opened to the public in May of 1993, The MARK of the Quad Cities is a multi-use arena that has played host to a wide variety of quality entertainment events, including concerts, sporting events, trade and consumer shows, business meetings, and social events.

The $36 million facility has attracted over 4 million visitors, been honored with numerous industry awards, and established itself as one of the most innovative venues of its kind.

PROMOTIONAL NEWS

Star Trek / Citibank Offer

Several weeks ago I received some phonecards I ordered from Citibank. Inside was a flyer advertising a collector's edition of Star Trek phonecards. I sent away for the 3-card set, and just got them this weekend. They are very nice looking, and produced by AT&T (and have the AT&T logo on the front). They came in a cardboard holder and seem to be thin plastic. The top card has the original Star Trek logo, the AT&T logo, and a photo of Kirk, McCoy and Spock. The middle card has the Star Trek Next Generation logo, the AT&T logo, and a photo from an episode (showing LaForge, Riker, and Scotty). The last card has the Star Trek Voyager logo, the AT&T logo, and a photo from an episode showing Harry Kim and Seven of Nine. Also, all three say "20 minutes" on them. They are $3.95/card so $11.85/set and that included shipping.
