NYNEX $1 Yellow Telephone Complimentary Card - A pilot program with optical telephone cards was conducted by NYNEX (now Bell Atlantic) between 1991 and 1994. They installed a number of card phones at both ends of the Staten Island Ferry and issued several different types of phonecards which they called "Change Cards". All these phonecards (and also the public phones) were produced by Landis & Gyr of Switzerland. Most of these phonecards pictured New York related sights. To help get the program started, NYNEX issued a promotional $1 phonecard with a picture of a yellow telephone. Yellow costumed employees were placed at the Ferry Terminals to hand out these cards to Staten Island commuters. The pilot program was concluded in 1994, at which time NYNEX switched over to magnetic backed cards. Powell Associates offers the above card in unused (mint) condition at $12.75 plus $3.00 for shipping charges. We have 15 of these cards in their original promotional folder, and we will be able to fill the first 15 orders with folders. If you are an advanced collector looking only for the rare and historical phone cards, we can offer you the above card issued as a Test Specimen (no serial number on the back). Very few NYNEX test cards are known to exist, and we would sell this one for $275.00 post paid. These and many other rare and interesting telephone cards are available from our extensive inventory by mail order (send for free catalog). Powell Associates has been in business and dealing in collectible phonecards since 1992. We recently moved our offices from Manhattan to Morganville, New Jersey. All major credit cards are accepted. Post Office Phonecard News

The following is from a press release of a report that is available at: www.gao.gov/new.items/gg99015.pdf

"The report also offered the results of the USPS ventures into selling telephone calling cards---a product that is now seen on the sales counters at virtually every post office in the country. The cards produced over $3 million in losses during their first three years of issuance---with profits of nearly $4 million finally coming in the first three quarters of 1997. The GAO indicated that, even though the phone cards may finally be making money, the sales of them are still below what Postal Service people had hoped.
