NEWS / COMMENTARIES

Buena Park Show Review

The first Buena Park Coin and Collectibles Expo was held this past week, with an attendence of 110 dealers. Of that total, there were five phonecard dealers. I would have publicized the show last week in the newsletter, but there was no newsletter. Geographically close to Long Beach, the show was similar in many ways. Show management was comprised of people who used to be involved with the Long Beach show. The dealers and collectors were almost the same, too. This show is supposed to take place twice a year, and could grow into another place in Southern California where there is a show with dealers from across the country. Friday night saw a meeting of a phonecard collector group organized by Steve Eyer. Due to a grumpy baby, I was unable to attend, but I heard it went nicely (and a collector walked out with over 20 phonecards!) The next show is set for November, more details when it is closer. The next Southern California show is at Long Beach in June, everyone in Southern California (and even beyond) should try to attend, as it is one of the largest displays of U.S. phonecard dealers anywhere in the country.

Collector's Advantage Publishing Again

By Tom Hunt

Yesterday, we were informed that the Collectors' Advantage has had life pumped back into it again, and will begin publishing in April. For those of you who aren't familiar with the Collectors' Advantage, they are a Collectibles publication concentrating on phonecards. We have learned that the new issue, which is a magazine, not a tabloid, will be poly bagged with all sorts of goodies in it. The feature and cover story will be regarding the artist OLIVIA, and will include four free, very high quality Erotic Cell cards, designed by her. Also included will be catalogs from Mercury Marketing and Powell. Also a flyer from Quantum Comics, publisher of Bloody Pulp Comics. Other undisclosed items will also be included.

The cover price of this issue is $4.00, which will include shipping(US only)! The OLIVIA Cells alone should be worth the $4.00! If you want to get a copy of the magazine, you can call the Collectors' Advantage at 1/800/773-3315. Or if you want to contact them by e-mail, the address is drtelecard@compuserve.com

Collectors Advantage will be honoring past subscriptions, but you must either call them on the phone at 201/796-1443, or send them an e-mail at DrTelecard@compuserve.com They will then get you all set up.

Vesper Italian Non-Magnetic Card

The first Italian non-magnetic remote prepaid promotional card ever issued for mass-market promotion is about to be released by Vesper, who will issue next week under the registered brand name, ExTel. This is a promotional card for a Supermarket chain, SIDIS, which is going to run a co-marketing program with one of its food suppliers, Fiorucci. A 2 minute phonecard will be given free by hostesses to every consumer who will go to the Fiorucci stand into Ipersidis ( Sidis hypermarkets ) around Easter, from April 3 to April 12.

There is more to come: in May, ExTel will issue 300,000 to 600,000 prepaid cards for a major multinational customer with a very special feature. Also, very soon, there will be an ExTel Collectors' Club Internet site which will be the first to propose to US collectors only European prepaid phonecards and more.

Lost in Space Phonecard

LOS ANGELES & NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 26, 1998-- MCI and New Line Cinema Corporation have joined forces for the first time, launching a series of joint promotions for "Lost In Space," one of 1998's most anticipated movie events. To commemorate the film's April 3rd release for fans nationwide, special promotional limited edition "Lost In Space" MCI PrePaid Phone Calling Cards are being released.

MCI PrePaid also joins the studio and a host of other corporate participants providing prizes for the "Lost In Space" Radisson/Discover Sweepstakes giveaway, with entries located in 193 Radisson Hotels nationwide. Grand Prize is a trip for four to London. Among various prizes, the winning family will receive 500 units of calling time for their travels abroad - courtesy of MCI PrePaid. MCI and New Line Cinema will further distribute special "Lost In Space" PrePaid gift cards in conjunction with radio promotional partners tied to advanced screenings of the film in ten key markets around the country, as well as to guests of the film's world premiere on March 29th.

"MCI is excited to help promote a highly anticipated film like 'Lost In Space,' and the technology theme makes this movie a perfect fit for us," said Charlie Wiggs, general manager of MCI PrePaid Markets. "These PrePaid cards give consumers a collectible piece of movie memorabilia with a practical purpose - long distance calling."

TVT Soundtrax (a division of TVT Records), the company releasing the film's soundtrack for New Line Cinema, will maximize the studio's new relationship with MCI by distributing 5,000 of these commemorative prepaid phone cards as a special promotional gift packaged onto the soundtrack in select Sam Goody/MusicLand retail outlets nationwide. Each card features "Lost In Space" studio artwork and includes 10 free minutes of domestic long distance calling time. These MCI PrePaid cards (available in select Sam Goody/MusicLand stores in time for the film's release), are free with purchase of the soundtrack. The cards are not available for sale anywhere.
