Murray Church Leaves Moneycard Collector

The following is a press release from Murray Church:

A new career opportunity has presented itself to me and I have decided to leave Amos Press and Moneycard Collector. My last day here in the office will be tomorrow, Friday, February 13th.

In the next few months my wife Kirsten and I will be moving from Sidney, Ohio back to Canada, to settle on the Pacific coast, either in Vancouver or Victoria, British Columbia.

I will rejoin the list as soon as I can and in the meantime can be reached via e-mail at my wife's address which is <kirsten@bright.net>.

I'd like to thank so many of you who have played a role in the success of Moneycard Collector and who continue to help make this hobby grow. - To the many dealers who have supported and continue to support the magazine.

- To the issuers who have also supported us because they truly understand the importance of the collector market to their overall success.

- And of course to the individual collector readers. Thanks to all of you. You are one wonderful group of people!

Prepaid phone cards, cash cards - all moneycards - remain, in my view, an absolutely wonderful collectible. When we say they have the beauty of postage stamps, the utility of coins and the tradability of trading cards we underline the tremendous attributes of moneycards. In the words of my kids, "Moneycards rock!".

I'm sure that through the excellent efforts of Tom Williams and Kathy Utz and our many freelance writers that Moneycard Collector will continue to help make it rock!

So, thanks to all of you again......eh? :) And let's all continue to enjoy this wonderful hobby.

Best to all,

Murray Church
founding publisher
Moneycard Collector

Commentary

I belive this hobby will really miss Murray at Moneycard Collector. Ive had the opportunity to speak with him frequently in person and via e-mail, and feel that his views about the direction of this hobby were correct (in my opinion) He is truly enthusiastic about this hobby. While he may not be at Moneycard Collector anymore, I hope that he does stay in touch with the hobby.

Long Beach Show Review

This past weekend saw the return of the Long Beach Collectibles Show This is a show that takes place three times per year, and is predominantly a coin show. However, it has had a phonecard presence for the past few years. This year was no different, as no fewer than 5 phonecard dealers were set up. Thursday and Friday were active days, and lots of new phonecards to view. If you are in the Southern California area, the next Long Beach show will be in June. Additionally, there will be a show held in Buena Park in April that will also feature a few phonecard dealers. More on that later.

Sprint NASCAR Racing Phonecards

KANSAS CITY, Mo., Feb. 9, 1998 -- In 1998, NASCAR will celebrate its 50th birthday. At the same time, the Petty family will celebrate 50 years of tearing up the track and bringing excitement to race fans all across the country. To honor this historic milestone, the Spree Prepaid Foncard from Sprint will offer race fans the chance to collect a little piece of racing history - a limited edition 50 domestic-minute Spree Racing Foncard featuring the First Family of racing: Richard, Kyle and Adam Petty. Adam is the first fourth generation professional athlete in any sport; his great-grandfather, Lee, won the first Daytona 500 in 1949.

"As long as there has been NASCAR, there has been a Petty on the track," said Marlene Waltz, Director of Prepaid Cards for Sprint. "Spree wanted to find a way to recognize this achievement and give race fans a chance to celebrate the Petty legacy."

In addition to the limited edition 50 domestic-minute Foncard, Sprint will also offer customers the opportunity to purchase three other commemorative Foncards. Fans can choose from a 43 domestic-minute card featuring "The King" Richard Petty, a 44 domestic-minute card featuring Kyle Petty, and a 45 domestic-minute card featuring the newest addition to the Petty dynasty, 17-year-old Adam Petty. The minutes on each Foncard represent the number of each of the race cars in the Petty racing stables.

"It's hard to believe my family has been racing for 50 years-I just hope a Petty will still be on the track 50 years from now," said Adam Petty. "The Spree Racing Foncards are a great reminder of our family's racing past, and with luck, our future. It also gives fans a fun way to stay in touch with the people they love, just like Spree helps me stay in touch with my dad and granddad when we're all criss-crossing the country."

The Spree Racing Foncards will hit the shelves this spring. Fans will be able to find cards at retail outlets where Spree cards are normally sold prior to a Winston Cup or American Speed Association (ASA) race rolling into town. Retailers in non-race markets will also be able to request the special limited edition cards.

In 1998, Sprint unveiled its Spree Racing team - consisting of Richard, Kyle and Adam Petty. Spree serves as Adam Petty's primary sponsor on the ASA circuit and as an associate sponsor of Kyle Petty. In addition, Sprint's Spree team is an associate sponsor of Richard Petty's #43 Car, driven in 1998 by John Andretti.

Spree cards are currently sold in $5, $10, $20 and $50 denominations. The special commemorative Spree racing Foncards will be priced differently for this promotion. Retailers who carry Spree cards include gas stations, convenience stores, supermarket chains and college bookstores nationwide.

Credit Card Phonecard

With my Capital One credit card statement this month, three 'free' 20 minute phone cards. One card has yellow tulips, one has a view of a mountain and the third has an in-line skater. Very attractive pictures. There is a $3.95 handling & activation fee for each card, which works out to 20 cents/minute. You are limited to four of each card. They also list a Collector's Set which contains all three cards, but it doesn't say if they are in a special folder or anything.
