Charity Auction Update

The charity auction is set to begin in just under three weeks. Again, I want to thank everyone who has sent material. I originally offered a first edition Card Mall Phonecard to those who donated $100 or more worth of cards. This offer was open to the first 20 people or businesses to do so. I have sent out 16 cards, so there are still 4 cards to be given away. Even if you don’t have $100 worth of cards to donate, any donations are accepted! I would like to have material by June 1, so I can catalog the auction. However, I will accept material until right before it goes live. If you have anything you want to donate (donations are tax deductible) please send them to:

Mickey Mantle / Kodak / Frontier Phone Card

ROCHESTER, N.Y.--(BW SportsWire)--May 12, 1997--

First Offering: Full Action Image Commemorates Mickey Mantle

Eastman Kodak Company and Frontier Corporation have announced plans to produce and distribute a collector's prepaid phone card showing a full-action image of New York Yankee immortal, Mickey Mantle.

The image shows Mantle hitting his 500th home run on May 14, 1967. It was created using KODAMOTION technology to replay the historic event. As the card is moved, viewers can watch Mantle hit the ball and watch its flight into the right field stands. The card incorporates a sequence of 24 images to create motion.

Kodak Comments

"Mickey Mantle is a great sports figure whose image creates excitement for sports collectors everywhere. We are pleased to work with Frontier to bring our KODAMOTION technology to the collectors' prepaid phone card market," said John Greve, General Manager of Dynamic Imaging. "The Frontier prepaid phone card allows fans to hold a moment of live-action sports history in their hand and to also have all the advantages of a prepaid phone card," Greve noted.

Frontier Comments

"The collector market, estimated in excess of $1 billion, is just emerging here in the U.S. and people are very interested in image-based cards, especially those that are linked to a particular theme such as sports," said Kevin Bennis, President of Frontier Communications.

"The prepaid phone card market will benefit from new imaging technology such as that demonstrated by Kodak, especially when linked with a national sports hero like Mickey Mantle. The multiple image action shown in the Mantle card is quite unique and we are pleased to lead the industry being the first telecommunications company to use this technology for the prepaid phone card market," Bennis explained.

Collectors' Image Set

According to Greve, Mantle's image is also used in a unique three-piece collectors' set. The series created by Kodak, includes the special edition prepaid phone card from Frontier, plus a 3" x 5" collector's card and a 16" x 20" piece. "These images show one of baseball's immortals, at a historic moment in sports, depicted with advanced imaging technology that brings the action of the moment to life," Greve said.

-- The images will be priced at:

The Frontier Communications prepaid phone card and the 3" x 5" collector's card show seamless motion captured and converted by Kodak's digital technology from authentic photographic coverage. The 16" x 20" piece features Mantle in a three-dimensional background scene. Mantle's image in the foreground will "flip" from the slugger batting right handed to Mantle batting left handed as viewers walk by the image. These "flip" images show Mantle in the 1961 season.

The phone card and collector's card will be limited in production days while the 16" x 20" piece will include only 1,997 individually numbered pieces.

Image Availability

Centennial Productions, (800) 333-2053, is a distributor for these unique images. The Mantle Image collectors' sets including the Frontier prepaid phone card, the 3" x 5" collector's card and a 16" x 20" piece will launch on a the Home Shopping Network as a limited edition set starting May 13. Then, remaining images will be available through a selected retail chain and through sports collectors' sources served by Centennial Productions.

MCI Flood Phonecards

GRAND FORKS, N.D.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 5, 1997--

5,000 prepaid calling cards distributed in North Dakota, Minnesota; mobile telephone facility deployed to East Grand Forks Civic Center

MCI is distributing 5,000 free prepaid telephone cards to the flood victims in North Dakota and Minnesota as part of its ongoing efforts to provide vital communications services to the residents of the disaster-ravaged areas.

The 5,000 prepaid cards will offer a total of 55,000 minutes of long distance calling time or 38 continuous days of round-the-clock calling. Residents can pick up the cards at the Red Cross service center located at the East Grand Forks Civic Center (300 15th St., N.E., East Grand Forks, Minn.) and at two First Bank branches in Hugo's Grocery Store, 1310 University Ave. in Crookston, Minn. and in its Medical Park Office, 1205 S. Columbia Road in Grand Forks, N.D.

"In times such as these, the ability to communicate with family, friends and loved ones is vital," said Laura Giadone, vice president of the West Region for MCI Business Sales and Service. "When disaster strikes, nothing is more valuable than peace of mind. We feel it's our duty to help deliver that precious commodity and we're proud to do it."

"The folks we're helping have basic emergency needs such as shelter, food, clothing, medical supplies and the means to contact friends and family," said Cheryl Parks, director of Red Cross Relief Operations. "Through its contribution of communications services, MCI has extended the Red Cross lifeline at our service center in East Grand Forks and far, far beyond."

Hillshire Farms

"Receive a FREE phone card when you buy any 2 packages of Hillshire Farm Smoked Sausage. To receive your 10-minute pre-paid calling card just send 2 UPC symbols from Hillshire Farms Smoked Sausage (any variety) to:

Hillshire Farm Phone Card
P.O. Box 25111
Cincinnati, OH 45225

Limit 4 free phone cards per household.

Offer good only in the U.S.A. and while supplies last. Void if taxed, restricted or prohibited by law. Allow up to 6 weeks for delivery. Offer expires 8/1/97."

Notice that the coupon does not state that you need to send in the coupon along with the UPC symbols? Seems odd and, although I would certainly recommend sending in the coupon if you have one, it might be worth a shot just sending in the UPCs if you can't find a coupon in your local paper.

The picture of the card in the ad shows graduation caps flying in the air, and the wording "Phone Home FREE! compliments of" with the HF logo below the wording.

Taken to the cleaners?

Found this in a Sunday newspaper insert today. Sign up for CLUB USA ($19.95) at Dry Clean USA and get a a 10 minute CLUB USA phone card 20% off everything for a year and a coupon book worth $50. Their prices are quite steep to begin with so it is not readily apparent who is getting taken to the cleaners with this deal.

Pillsbury Phonecard

I found an offer for a 20 minute phonecard from Pillsbury in the Sunday ads this weekend. You need 2 proofs of purchase and $2.99. Offer expires 8/31/97. Has a picture of the Pillsbury Doughboy holding a phone and the Pillsbury symbol. Only one per household, but no register receipt required, just the two proofs of purchase and an original coupon from the Sunday paper.

Ore Ida

I just found a new Ore Ida 20 minute phonecard offer. You need the coupon from their frozen potato packages and 3 proofs of purchase. Two phonecards per address. I found the offer on a package of O'brien Hash Brown potatos. It says they must receive the request between 7/1/97 (still two months away) and 2/15/98.

Wonderbra

If you buy a Wonderbra you can get a 10 minute card from the cashiers. I saw it at Macy's and Lord & Taylors while looking for a Mother's Day present for my wife. The card is a punchout paper, but pretty nice. The card is b&w with yellow wording says "the one and only Wonderbra". Uncovered pin, expires 10/30/97 and it is done by PromoTel.
