Phonecard Resources Part I

Last week I noted a few magazines that I like, and information on how to obtain them. What I ended up receiving was a lot of mail asking why I did not include other types of information, or other publications. This material was reprinted from an earlier addition of POL from May of 1996. When I re-do it again, I will add more magazines to the list. For the meantime, here is an additional magazine. Karsten Windfelder of TKJ (Telefon-Karten-Journal) from Germany wants POL readers to know about their publication. While the focus is on German cards and in German, she notes that there is some information in English. For those interested in checking out the magazine on the web, the address is:

http://www.tkj.de

There is an English Edition of the web site.

Phonecard Resources Part II

In addition to magazines, I asked a number of dealers to respond with price list information. For anyone interested in receiving free price lists from the following dealers, just write or e-mail. Many of the readers of this newsletter do not subscribe to the various hobby magazines, and I believe this to be a good way to get dealer information directly to you

Nobody Beats the Wiz

Submitted by Lei Zhang

Here is a promotional phonecard news in the holiday season.(a littel late!) In the past few weeks, Nobody beats the WIZ gave out phonecards for ANY purchase in the stores.

There are three different cards depicting Joe Namath(ex Jet), Patrick Ewing(Knicks), and Phil Simms(ex Giants). With Nobody beats the WIZ log and some advertising words. Every card come with 2 minutes of phone time and can be rechargeable at 25c/unit. The service is provide by TotalTel. The cards are beautiful and with color picture at both sides. The back of the card have calling instruction and a small picture of the player which is same to the front.

However, it seems that Nobody beats the WIZ didn't give much exposure about this great promotion. The extensive WIZ commercials on TV and newspapers never mention this promotion. I knew this only when I passed a WIZ store and saw the poster on the window. In the following days I visited several WIZ stores and some stores didn't have poster at all. Also, they may neglect the collector's need. Every store I visited had only one of the three cards. In one store, the cashier gave me the cards--stapled on a small poster. When I explained that by stapling the card the card maybe regarded as damaged. The cashier seemed confused and tried to explained to me that the pin number is still valid and the card is still good!

7-11 Cards North of the Border (Canada)

Submitted by Guido Van Duyn

Here is a little more information on the 7-11 Collector Series of Phonecards of NHL stars available in British Columbia. Series 1, which came out Dec. 1 st. includes four 15 min. cards featuring Vincent Damphousse, Joe Sakic, Curtis Joseph, and Doug Gilmour; four 30 min. cards, with Pavel Bure, Eric Lindros, Theoren Fleury and Ray Bourque. Series 2 came out early this month and includes three 15 min. cards, with Trevor Linden, Doug Weight and Pierre Turgeon; three 30 min. cards with Paul Kariya, Steve Yzerman and Brian Leetch. Series 3 is due to be available in mid March and yet to be announced. These cards work anywhere in Canada and the U.S.A. the only drawback is these cards seem a little pricey at $9.99 CDN. and $18.99 CDN. respectively, although 7-11 does go on to say that a limited number of complete collector sets will be available for special order starting March 15, 1997.
